Our Purpose
From time to time we get asked the purpose of this blog. Why do we bother? We don’t do anything controversial or in the “news”. Heaven knows the only things that seem to get in the news today are about hate & discontent, who’s ripping off who, big business & bailouts, and a president who no matter how hard he tries is assailed and criticized at every opportunity.
It seems we have become a culture nurtured and maintained by the “nattering nabobs of negativism” as Spiro Agnew once quipped. Our media is obsessed with the dark side of humanity occasionally throwing in a one minute expose of something uplifting on the nightly news (an electronic mea culpa that somehow is meant to show the media’s humanity).
And we as a nation drive by the enfolding tragedies, aloof and safe in our shielded cocoons enjoying a vicarious thrill as we gaze and turn away – satisfied that this wreck is happening to someone else. What we fail to grasp is that a steady diet of negativity gradually and inexorably forms our character, our view of life.
If that is what you are looking for, so be it. We are not here to do what every other blathering media organization does. We exist for one purpose: to lift up, shine a light on and celebrate the small businesses & organizations that exist in our community. We don’t charge or make a dime off this. It’s gratis.
We say “thank you” to all who contribute to the well being of our community. These are the faces of friends, neighbors and relatives who go about their days adding value and meaning through the work they do. These are the “everyday people” who struggle, sacrifice, fall and get right back up without benefit of bailouts, buyouts or sugar daddies. These are the backbone of the American way of life, and we choose to lift them up.
So the next time you need a service or want to be lifted up – when you get tired of the same old, same old’ in the media – when you finally realize the big box corporate world offers nothing more than a name and hoards its profits – try these locals out. They work hard and proud. They feed their families and pay their taxes. If you know anything about small business, you should know that the tax system is always skewed to those who can most afford it. Think about that. Challenge me. Get off your couch-potato butts and send your business into your community!
